History of Taj Mahal
This most famous mausoleum was designed in white marble during the 1600’s by the former Mughal emperor Shah Jehan (1627 – 1658).
The emperor named it Taj Mahal meaning the Crown of Palaces or Crown Palace but was initially called Roza-e-Munawara.
The Taj Mahal is an Islamic mausoleum built from ivory-white marble. Amidst magnificent gardens on the banks of the Yamuna River, one of the greatest temples of all time constructed in marble – the Taj Mahal, a sign of the love for a Great Emperor to his beloved queen!
It took 20,000 men, tons of elephants, precious stones, diamonds, a massive amount of gold and Mughal riches to create this over 20-year-old mausoleum.

Timings of Taj Mahal in India
Taj Mahal opens 30 Minutes before sunrise and closes 30 Minutes before sunset during normal operating days.
There are separate queues for Foreign tourists and Domestic tourists to enter to Taj and signs will guide you accordingly.
The compound is open in the weekdays from 6:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening, except for the Fridays, for a total of thirteen hours. For Fridays, the compound is opened for prayers at the mosque only for 2 hours, from 12 pm to 2 pm in the afternoons.
The facility is also opened during the full moon for night viewing, on that day and two days before and after. The program excludes Ramadan’s month and Fridays.
Taj Mahal Architecture
The design of this magnificent white marble monument was undertaken by a renowned architect from those times named Usatad Ahmed Lahori. The masons, staff, and others involved in the construction of this structure were brought in from different parts of the world including Italy , France, Turkey, parts of Asia and even Armenia.
Completing this grand construction of pure white marble and more than 30 types of costly precious and semi-precious stones took over 2 decades.
On the resting place and Taj’s exterior is calligraphy crafted with black marble. The foundations slant outwards, so that should they do collapse, they collapse outwards.
Story Behind Taj Mahal in India
This marble statue is representative of the Emperor’s love for Mumtaz Mahal, his dearest wife. She died when their fourteenth child was born. He wanted to build this memorial for her and bury himself next to her, even though he had many wives.
The Emperor’s last days were spent in a jail at Agra Fort from where he got a good view of the Taj Mahal and spent his last days admiring his magnificent building. Tagore rightly described the Taj as “an eternity face teardrop.”
